Campden Tablets

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Campden Tablets

Post by Kegman » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:31 pm

Hi,

It's my first brew day Tomorrow and had planned on boiling the liquor for 30 mins tonight, then Tomorrow when cooled do the Alk test. The water is pretty close to the top of my boiler and having just brought it to the boil I switched it off quickly worried it would end up mostly on the floor.

I've read instead that I can use 1/2 a Campden tablet for 25l and so hunted out a jar of them (Youngs) left over from my wine making days. They're pretty old but still sealed and the best before literally says, "Best before 6 months after opening" so I guess they will be OK.

It says on the side, "Dissolve 1 crushed tablet per gallon" so I'm a bit concerned mine are for wine, they're pretty small too. Below is a pic on my hand, is this the regular size?

Thanks,

Kegman.

Hi mate,

I cannot vouch for their quality but they are suitable for what you need. A campden tablet is a campden tablet

Just add it to your HLT by crushing half a tablet between two spoons and within a couple of minutes it will have done its stuff.

You raise a very good question, do preservatives go off?

I suspect Chris' point was that since they are a preservative (if you keep them dry/sealed) they should keep indefinitely.
