Liquor Treatment Help, Please

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Liquor Treatment Help, Please

Post by alwilson » Fri May 06, 2011 12:02 pm

Hi All,

As I've mentioned previously, I've got a water report from Murphy's due anytime now.

In the meantime I'm buying various brewing odds and sods online, and seeing as I'm paying for the shipping I want to add as much as necessary now.

So far:

Campden Tabs (to remove Chlorine)
CRS [brupacks] (to alter pH)

Am I likely to need anything else, such as gypsum or calcium chloride. I can appreciate without seeing the report its hard to say and outside of that all I know is its Chessington supply water.

So any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Cheers
Alex

I'd say the usual three were the campden tablets, CRS and gypsum. But of course the gypsum tends to be an 'add it for safety' rule of thumb, if you're getting a full water report you could well end up doing something more targeted to your specific water so it may or may not be relavent then.

Cheers

I use DLS (dry liquor salts) rather than gypsum as it contains minerals such as magnesium as well as the calcium you get in gypsum. What you need will depend on your water though. The Murphy's report will tell you exactly how much CRS + DLS you need. Murphy's use different terms so for DLS read DWB, and CRS read AMS.
