Chalky taste

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Chalky taste

Post by flytact » Wed Apr 11, 2007 1:01 pm

Please move this if it's not in the right place.

Brewed a simple recipe (see below), only difference in my brewing was the addition of Camden tabs to my brew water. Used a ratio of 1 tab per 12 gallons (45L). Could this chalky taste be because I added too much? I've never had this taste and the tablets were the only thing different. This is the first time I've used them.

I've got an 80/- ready to keg and will see if it is there as well.

Recipe:
* 6.5 lbs. Maris Otter
* 1 lbs. Honey
* 0.5 lbs. Caramalt
* 0.25 lbs. Golden Naked Oats
* 0.25 lbs. Chocolate Malt
1 oz fuggle
wyeast 1728

Very, Very, Unlikely, I've tried another brewers pilsner beers that have used up to 8 Campden Tablets in 50L, and certainly no 'chalky' taste.

Peculiar... I've never used camden tabs or anything like that, I'd be interested to hear if your 80/- has the same taste.

Are there any of those ingredients you haven't used before?

You know, I've researched this a bit and "chalky" seems to be a flavor profile. I've also done some "research" at home and found that it really isn't too bad and may actually be oddly pleasant.

Caramalt is a new ingredient for me. We'll see about the 80/-.

OK, the results are in. The chalky taste has disappeared from the first batch and is not at all evident in the 80/-. Chalk it up to being a bit young. :)

BTW, the Caledonian 80/- is outstanding!! No tweaks or changes. Great recipe.
