Water treatment headache

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Water treatment headache

Post by smeggedup » Sat Sep 03, 2011 3:00 pm

hi all

ive try'd to look at this a few times but never made an sense out of it all, so i hope some of you can help.

i've entered the figures in to the water treatment calculator here on jims site http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/water/water.html

i've used the figures from my area provide here http://www.ywonline.co.uk/web/WQZ.nsf/0 ... %20WSZ.pdf

and here
http://www.yorkshirewater.com/extra-ser ... n&section=

heres a picture of the figures entered Image

questions

how do i find out the Carbonate co3, the Alkalinity, and Hardness

and whats this Carbonate Reduction Method - is this what you do or add to the water to reduce the carbonate, how is this normally done ?

how do you work out the Sulpahate Chloride Ratio ? is it needed?

when i enter the figures the calculater shows a warning as below
Image

have i entered the figures wrong ?, whats it telling me, could it be becasue i havent entered all the figures ? is it a problem ?

the water report doen't show the ppm of most of the elements.
how can i find these, calcium, bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride, sodium, magnesium, as most calculators i've seen want this information.

thanks to all

Not sure, but it could be the "Total Hardness mg/l (mean 90.5875)"

Anyway, best to get a salifert test kit as it can vary
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

The only thing you're missing there is total alkalinity, which the salifert test will tell you, and total hardness, which is on your report as vacant pointed out above. The other values will be calculated from that (you'll probably have to fill in some of your real values again). Once you have everything filled in properly, you shouldn't get any warnings.

It's a good idea to do the salifert test before every brew. It only takes a minute and it'll show up variations in your supply.

hi

all

I've finally got around to getting a test kit.

I've done a test on the water supply as a trial run.
The results are reading in ml's = 0.42--kh valve in dkh = 8.9--alkalinity in meq/L = 3.19

But which box do i enter the info to the alkalinity or the hardness box or any other box ?
and the require info is in mg/l or ppm, so do i need to convert my results to the required ones ?

if i just need to enter the alkalinity in meq/L which is 3.19 for my supply into the alkalinity box then i think i've cracked it.

But would rather not poison my self [-X or swmbo

cheers

to convert to mg/l or ppm Multiply meq by 50 and enter the value in the as CaCO3 box ;)

Enter your chloride as 37 and your sulphate as 54 as per your report.
