Salifert Calcium Test Kit

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Salifert Calcium Test Kit

Post by barneey » Mon Nov 07, 2011 5:46 pm

Hi All,

Does any one know if the Salifert Calcium Test Kit can be used on normal tap water or is it for Marine application (salt water).

Thanks

I use it for normal water. It's not too brilliant for my water out of the tap as it has very little calcium in it (25ppm) salt water has higher levels(200-400ppm IIRC), but when I have added my calcium salts I can then measure how much calcium I have in the brewing liquor . . . which is much more useful

Aleman thanks for the reply, I really want to measure Ca at between 60 and say 130 for my tap water, I`ve since noticed that Salifert do indeed do a testing kit for freshwater http://www.tmc-ltd.co.uk/aquarium/salif ... hwater.asp, just need to find someone who sales the kit, most for sale are the marine kit ones.

I use this version for testing alkalinity - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Salifert-Carb ... 4cf9482563

could you not use the marine calcium one?

Yep already have the alkalinity one, which gave the result of 256, the same water sample from two independant labs gave the result as 238 and other at 242 so in the right ball park. I just need to measure the Ca rating now to compare against the two lab reports.

The idea being that before every brew I will take a couple of "home" tests, if they in the right ball park I`ll use the lab reported ones.

i`m going to pop down to the local aqaurium place tomorrow to see if I can buy or order a Calcium fresh water kit.

Cheers
