Water newbie--go gentle !!

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Water newbie--go gentle !!

Post by guypettigrew » Wed Nov 23, 2011 8:33 pm

Despite brewing for some years, water treatment has never figured high on my agenda. Now, however, I fancy giving it a go.

After loads of reading and help from this site (thanks, fisherman), I'm beginning to get the hang of it.

My Salifert kit, which arrived today, has given me the CaCO3 value, so I can now use the CRS I bought from my LHBS to sort the alkalinity out.

Adding salts to balance the calcium also seems to be heavily recommended. My LHBS didn't have any Brupaks DLS, just some Brupak stuff called "Burton water crystals".

The CRS is no problem, I can do the maths and work out how much to use.

But, are the Burton water crystals the same as DLS? Also, both say they need to be added to the grain, not the mash liquor. Why? Can't I just dissolve the required amount in boiling water and add it to the mash liquor? Adding it to the grain seems a bit hit and miss. How do I ensure proper distribution in the grain? It's a very small amount compared to the amount of grain.

What about camden tablets, please? Should I add some to the liquor and, if so, when?

Sorry for what are probably dim questions, but this a first for me.

You add to the grain because the solubility of the salts is not great and the mash ph and action of the grains rubbing at each other helps dissolve. Camp den tabs, I use 1 tab per 60 litres to remove chloramine
