Grahams calculator and DLS.

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Grahams calculator and DLS.

Post by TheSheeprug » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:58 am

Apologies for being yet another numpty asking basic questions, but i'm curious to relate Grahams treatment calculator recommendations to DLS usage. As far as I can see Brewpacs don't actually state what is in DLS (apart from 'a blend of salts), but has anybody been able to deduce what it contains?

This might help with using it DLS = DWB
http://www.murphyhomebrew.com/tech-sheets/tech_DWB.pdf
I don't know the balance of salts it contains though, and its a shame that the GW treatment calculator doesn't throw out a figure for a general purpose DLS/DWB salt addition.
It is a blend of the 3 things, Calcium Sulphate, Calcium Chloride & Magnesium Sulphate

Anyone know any more?

Murphys tech_DWB.pdf has changed recently, but from the previous incarnation...

Analysis
Chloride [as Cl-] (%) 17 ± 0.85
Sulphate [SO 4-] (%) 35 ± 2.25
Total Hardness [as CaCO 3 ] (%) 45 ± 2.25
Maximum Limits of Impurities
As (ppm) 3
Pb (ppm) 10
Heavy Metals as Pb (ppm) 20

well I have my report
ph =7.44 @20 degrees c
Ca 75
Mg 8
Na not given
Fe 0.1
NH4 <0.1
NO2 <0.1
CL 18
NO3 5
SO4 9

21.9 french harness which I believe is 219 ppm caco3

grahams calculator has boxes for Na and carbonate CO3 which I dont have but when I input my 219 ppm hardness figure it inserts a CO3 figure automatically so I assume this is ok
not having a figure for sodium Na is this going to screw up the calculations
any ideas please
as I have stated before in other posts I am getting a bitterness appear after the boil stage of my brew ,after mash sweetness ,after boil very bitter which subsides with time i assume fron his and maybe suphate chloride ratio
