My water report and question on hardness

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

My water report and question on hardness

Post by dean_wales » Fri Mar 30, 2012 3:41 pm

Hello,

Sotuh west water confirmed today that Exeter is supplied solely with water from the Exe (who'd have known!). The number for my, soft-ish, supply are:

My outlook will be leave it as is for continental beers and just add some gypsum for hoppy english pale ales. Stouts and darker english beers might require more additions.

Value Average
Chlorine 0.5 mg/l
Calcium 28 mg/l
Chloride 25 mg/l
Magnesium 4 mg/l
Sodium 12 mg/l
Carbonate 18 mg/l
Sulphate 30 mg/l
Hardness 30 (As Ca)
Alkalinity 55 (As HCO3)
pH 7.9

So that I can start using the GW calculator, can you help me with the hardness value? Its listed as total hardness as Ca??? The calculator doesnt have that as an option.

Please help!

Dean.
