Gypsum

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Gypsum

Sorry if this has been asked before but:

I have only recently started treating my water. I use a salifert kit, water report from Thames Water & Grahams water calculator. I normally treat all 38 litres of water at the start of the day but my question is:

Is it okay to add the gypsum along with all the other salts, CRS etc at the start or am I better splitting it into two parts and putting it directly into the mash and boil.

CRS goes into the liquor first.

I mix all the gypsum with the dry grains prior to mashing. I believe some people add half their gypsum to the mash then half to the boil. Try both ways. I couldn't tell any difference, can you?
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Thanks Vacant,

I'll split it between the mash tun and boiler.

When calculating how much calcium needs to be added,do everybody just add the gypsum as per gram. The reason I ask is I understand that gypsum is only 23% calcium.
