Is my water OK to use for brewing

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Is my water OK to use for brewing

Post by fordpopular » Mon Nov 05, 2012 11:46 pm

I live in the middle of knowhere and my tap water doesn't come from a water company its fell water piped to about 10 houses in the line it is filtered and it tastes great, no chemical tastes
but it does bother me that it will be inconsistent and could contain bacteria etc. its quite difficult to get a good lather with soap so I guess its quite hard
but I dont get any calcium deposits in the dishwasher, taps or shower so a bit confusing what is the best way to get some kind of analysis on it as i doubt
the estate that supplies it will keep records
Having said that I have done about 20 Kits using it straight from the tap and not had a dodgy brew, now that I have started AG brewing I want to get it right
and its the one factor which is bothering me

any advice or anyone in a similar situation??

If its worked fine for kits then it must be fairly clean. For All Grain it will all get boiled anyway so I wouldn't worry about contaminates.
As for mineral content you could go by guess work, but probably easier to send some off to Murphys home brew to have it analysed. They don't charge much.

Thanks for the info
just had a look at Murphy's website and its about £18 for a water analysis which seems reasonable, probably worth repeating every so often to see if it stays constant

Cheers
