Water profile
Right I've just got my water report from wallybrew. Cheers for that.
So I'm going to brew a pale English ale but wound like the malt aspect of it to show slightly more I think.
What would be a good profile to aim at?

Chloride biased. Need to know what's in your water to say more.Bunglebrewsbeer wrote:Right I've just got my water report from wallybrew. Cheers for that.

Re: Water profile
Blimey, not much in that, you'll have Del Boy wanting to buy it off you
You're OK for Pales and Lagers but you have a problem with darker beers and that is a whole world of pain. A good starting point would be to plumb these numbers into Grahams Beer Engine water calculator on here. Choose a target profile and then add the suggested salts to hit it. You don't have a problem with alkalinity so its mostly sulphate and chloride to be added.

Re: Water profile
To select water profile. Click on "custom liquor" it loads the required profile of salts etc in the calc. Depending on the type you choose,
I choose sweet pale mostly.
Good luck

Re: Water profile
You've got great water as a base, it's similar to mine in Glasgow. In fact do you get your water from Loch Katrine? It's almost exactly the same I think
I use this spreadsheet for calculations as it has the ability to input the grist and also bits for lactic acid and phosphoric acid which grahams doesn't have http://homebrewingphysics.blogspot.co.u ... water.html . It is in us measurements though
But the GW one is great to start with

Re: Water profile
Attached is a copy of my water report from Northumbrian Water. I am totally confused with it in trying to decide what sort of water I have for brewing. Is there anyone here who could assist me in trying to understand it and what i should be looking for in trying to find what sort of water i have and what improvements i would need for different styles of beer/larger.
Many thanks in advance for your assistance
Was hoping i could attach but it seems i can only copy sorry for that.

Re: Water profile
I advise a proper analysis for brewing. This will give you accurate figures. The Water Co. is just giving out statutory information i.e. of no real help at all. At best you will have the legal limits and an average; hopeless. By the way it only contains information on 2 things that really interest a brewer any way, sulphate and chloride. If you're serious about water treatment it is important to know precisely what you are starting with, anything else is guesswork or Alchemy.

Re: Water profile
No, it's not very helpful and getting a sample of your water analysed is the best way froward.
From what you've displayed it appears your water is reasonably soft. Average values for sodium, sulphate and chloride are 6.4ppm, 48ppm and 11ppm. Can you give the hardness value Northumbria Water give? It might be on another page. From that we might estimate the amounts for calcium and magnesium.

Thanks for your quick replies, so where is the best(cheapest) place to get a water sample tested.
