New Salifert test kit

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

New Salifert test kit

Post by guypettigrew » Sat Oct 06, 2018 5:59 pm

The new KH/Alkalinity test kit from Salifert only has a table giving the result in dKH. No longer does it show a meq/l value.

The leaflet contained in the box gives a conversion factor of 1dKH=0.357meq/l.

This means the dKH value should be multiplied by 17.85 (instead of multiplying the meq/l value by 50) to arrive at a ppm value.

It may be this is more accurate than the old table. A quick run through some of the pipette readings shows a closeness, but not an exact match, between the dKH and meq/l numbers in the original table.

Other people's comments would be appreciated.

I don't think it will affect accuracy much if the number/resolution of rows is the same? Fundamentally the size of drop and judgement of colour are still as they were, which makes relative subtleties with the table unimportant. So, probably the main affect (unfortunately) will be to confuse more new homebrewers; IMO it has generally been better to ignore the KH column due to confusion with hardness.
