Grains gone off?

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Grains gone off?

Post by Brewedout » Sun Jan 13, 2019 5:55 pm

I've not been brewing in a while, but I'm about to start once more.

I have 2 questions...

1. I have grains from October 2017 not yet crushed. Will these still make good beer? They have been stored in standard grain sacks in a cardboard box.

2. Assuming yes to the previous question. I have 1kg of torrified wheat still sealed in the plastic bag. There are a fair number of blackened grains within this pack rather than the normal golden colour for torrified wheat. I can't recall if they were like this when I had them. Can anyone help here? Are they normal?

Thanks

Mike

Crush some and taste them.

Or just chuck them and start again. 1kg of wheat is no loss. How much do you have of the other grains?

20kg of marris otter, plus 1kg bags of crystal, flaked wheat, roasted barley, wheat malt, Amber.

Not necessarily a huge loss, but not insignificant either! But when you spend a day making it not great if its off.

1. As long as they've been kept in reasonably cool, dry conditions they should be OK.

2. Never seen that before.

Looks like it may be a goer, I might try a darker style first. Tempted to not use the torrified wheat though since no one else has seen this. It will be good to get back into brewing after such a long break from it. Thanks for your thoughts

1. I'd use this. As long as it tastes ok, go for it
2. I don't know why it's got black bits, but i'm weary. I'd chuck it myself

If you chew them and the grain is soft don’t use them, if solid and u get a crunch the grain is still good and fresh

I have a 8 month old bad of Pilsner, about 2 kg left, has a crunch

I have an old bag of pale, it’s gone soft
