Hookey Street - Evening Brew 5th November

Post by Wez » Mon Nov 05, 2007 5:37 pm

My first evening brew this evening, should have the boiler on in an hour to heat the mash liquor.

5000.00 gm Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (5.9 EBC) Grain 90.3 %
410.00 gm Caramel/Crystal Malt - 10L (19.7 EBC) Grain 7.4 %
130.00 gm Chocolate Malt (886.5 EBC) Grain 2.3 %
260.00 gm Cara-Pils (3.9 EBC) Grain 4.4 %
70.00 gm Oregon Fuggle [4.70%] (90 min) Hops 30.1 IBU
20.00 gm Styrian Goldings [3.00%] (15 min) Hops 2.6 IBU
20.00 gm Styrian Goldings [3.00%] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
1 Whirlfloc Tablet (10 mins)

25L Batch
Target OG 1052 (75%)
EBU 31

Two changes from the last time I did this, the first is the bittering hop, using Oregon Fuggle rather than Northdown (as I forgot to pick them up  ) the second is the addition of Cara-Pils to aid head formation/retention.

Only joking. I'm tempted to do one soon as I need to build some stocks up before Chrimbo and weekends are just too busy  . Hope it all goes well for you.

Cheers chaps - Mash started at 18:20, might have a beer now, I normally brew at 6am so beer isn't an option, hmmm I wonder if I drink during a brew wether I'll fix the haze issue......got to be worth a try!

Well I must say this evening brewing lark is much nicer than getting up at 6am.

Boil started at 9pm, looks like a pre Tuesday finish!

It was nice to have a pint in one hand and fight the foam from the boil with the other, I kind of felt like a fat, alcholic zoro!

great stuff wez, seems you have it all under control, did you decide to go for a 60 min mash or boil in the end?

Stuck with 90/90 to see how much of a nightmare it would be but very pleased, the wort is chilling as I type and Mrs Wez is walking in with my Cheese & Onion Bap Supper 8) god bless evening brews!

Glad your enjoying it - I tried it once and went back to mornings but then I have no qualms about the odd beer at 6 am!
