Brew Day 14/07

Post by sagwalla » Sat Jul 15, 2006 6:34 am

Insomniac Brewing Unit

I couldn't sleep this AM (lying in bed, listening to the dawn chorus and watching the beautiful Norfolk sunrise), so I decided to get up and get a brew under my belt. It's been a while.

Brewing with what I've got:

5kg Maris
200g Wheat

Target OG 1050 (73% efficiency)

I'm going to hop this with a load of Saaz (3.2%) aiming at 40 IBUs and then finish with some Amarillo 5 mins from the end of the boil.

The last time I brewed, I used all Amarillo and, while it was okay, I thought it was a bit cloying (that might also have been the yeast). So I thought I'd aim for something bitter, but not so one-note-wonder. This is a little stronger than my usual target; I'm expecting 5% instead of the usual 4.6% for this kind of grain bill.

Just finished sparge at 0845; first element was on about 0835 and it looks like it won't be long 'til we're at the boil.

I had to start from cold water at the HLT, and I like to let it get close to the boil to (hopefully) move off some of the potential chlorine; that may be a waste of time; I don't know my local water very well. I started mashing at 0650.

Amarillos are a "super-Cascade" hop; single supplier. I believe they come from Oregon in the US. I bought them from Hop & Grape.

ETB at this point is before 1130, although "last month's beer" was brewed in May; I've had a hard time getting a homebrew in of late. We're planning to go to Woodforde's for lunch. That should take some of the sting out.

And I'm envisioning an afternoon nap!
