Big lumps on top of beer

Post by drbell » Mon Feb 11, 2008 3:16 pm

It was bottling day today and I found that my brew still had a number of clumps of light brown powdery stuff floating on top of the beer. I bottled anyway but it started causing a problem with the last 10 or so bottles as not only will these contain some of these clumps, but also it blocked the tap. I was able to free the tap by either raising the tube or opening it more, but this seemed to cause some bubbling which would have let air into the beer.

Can anyone tell me what are these lumps please? And if I did somehting wrong to cause them?

(I did mark these late bottles so I will be able ot tell the end result)

I will be adding the full details on my blog (and here) of bottling day later today or tomorrow for anyone interested.

Yeast?

ok, thanks. From their taste I think they are indeed yeast. With my next brew I tried to make sure there weren't any of these left at the start and hopefully they wont form either. I added the yeast to warm water first this time which made it easier too.
