I missed the last couple of posts on this...sorry chaps

retourrbx, for some reason I have no tasting notes on this one but I remember it.
I don't think what I have to say should put you off doing the recipe, it's only my opinion.

I found it lacking, both in strength and taste. MrsV1 liked it and said it was the least bitter of all the ales I've made.
I'm not sure whether my water and lack of ph treatment made much difference and the only way I'm going to know is to brew it again.

It was a very easy drinking beer but to me it was incipid. It lacked hop taste, aroma and bitterness.
I'm fairly sure my lack of experience made it like this and I will be brewing it again to do it justice, or just to confirm my initial findings.

I won't be changing anything until I definately know I don't like the original
Hi Vossy, when you dry hop in the cornies will you containing them in a bag either weighed down or floating?
Is it a bad idea to put them in loose and are they likely to block the dip tube if done so?
Bit late now jb  I never got round to dry hopping but when I do it'll be in a floating bag, or something suspended from the lid in some way.
I would imagine loose they'll block the dip tube or at worst the out posts.

Better still - in a weighted bag, and then the beer will flow through the hops on it's way up the dip tube. Unless you're going to roll your cornie regularly, what's the point of having the hoppiest beer the furthest away from the take up? I weigh down in cornies and bottom tap barrels and let the bag float in top tap barrels; it doesn't block the tube. Don't put them in loose though. The stainless steel float weight that comes with the old flat king keg float was ideal, but any stainless bolt or big nut will do.

Too much info, or did your google search come up with something diffferent to mine? I got pages about stuffing dry hops into green beer.

V, I'm drinking mine at the mo and it's the original MO recipe. I have no probs with the bitterness and hop aroma as both are strong but it could do with a bit more body imo :D

Cheers ss  well worth having another go then.
I'd also describe my effort as thin

I'll nail it next time

Hope you enjoy your Sunshine Vossy. I've made it about a dozen times, originally to MO's recipe, which is refreshing to drink in summer, due to it's low ABV of 3.6%, but this time of year find it a bit thin, so have tweaked the recipe as follows:
Maris Otter.....4250g
Wheat Malt.....225g
Start of boil...........Brambling Cross...55g
End of boil, cool to 90C and steep for 60mins with 90g of Brambling Cross.
Quantities are for 25litrebrewlength. Finished up with 26.5litres at an OG of 1039. Delicious :D
I have always just used Irish Moss and been happy with the results. The only two brews I've had to throw away have been those using Brupaks Protafloc copper finings. Won't use them again :!:

Hi Stonechat

looks very nice, what did you think of the Brambling Cross in such a light brew

I'll have to try that Stonechat
I bet it's got great aroma with those steeping hops 8)

In the original MO recipe the brambling cross comes across as a light blackcurrant leaf flavour. With the big increase in amount of steeping hops the flavour is more intense but certainly not bitter or harsh.
The only other poster who has tried this brew is Gurgeh, who, if he picks up on this post might give a clearer description of the flavour.
Have only got three 113g blocks of Brambling Cross left, so might eke them out by going for the thinner brew in the summer

It's a 1036 brew with pale malt and wheat only - how much body do you expect it to have?

My suggestions for increasing body, if that's what you want, would be to

(1) use about 20% more malt than you need and sparge only as far as you need to get the extract you want.

(2) Use 5-10% Carapils/Carahell/Caramalt in the recipe - like crystal but without the colour or nutty caramel flavours - a body builder.

(3) mash a little hotter.

just put this on to mash as an evening brew, don't often do these.
Had a shit day at work so needed something to calm me down.

I've mashed at 66, the grain bill is roughly the same but I've fiddled slightly with the hops to give a 30 litre brew length and use a full vacpac of hops, they are 2005 and could do with using up.

MO low colour 5.06kg
Wheat malt 260g
5.2 stabiliser 1.5 tbsp

Bramling Cross 60g 60mins
Bramling Cross 30g 15mins
Bramling Cross 40g 0mins

Whirlfloc 1 tab 15mins

Yeast WPL001

fingers crossed
