" Ruddles County " ~ What Might Be Similar, Please

Post by Ditch » Fri Mar 28, 2008 6:46 pm

Not a Huge issue. Only, having decided Coopers Stout is my numero uno to (eventually!) kick off with, I'll obviously want something in reserve to start next. I'm thinking, as I'll have some stout, I'd might as well branch on out and go for something completely different. Good, strong comparrison.

I've been thinking my head off about what I used to drink (I stopped over a decade ago and have only drunk Guinness since resuming a couple of years back) and all I can remember which seems viable is my passion for and enjoyment of a drop of Ruddles County after a hard days work.

Can't even remember What I liked about it so much. But it was - I believe - quite strongly distinctive in some way or another. Malty, perhaps? I like malty.

Not looking to do a complete Dave Lines, obviously. Just something along the, er ..... lines ( ) of 'County.

Suggestions anticipated with deep interest. Thankyou :D

To me Ruddles County is hop, hop, hoppy

Why not go for the Dave Lines version :?:

Thats my next one planned after the Wadworths 1824 Particular that I will be brewing for the Wales and West Competition in May 2008. :D

" Hoppy " Well, I'll be blowed! Is That what caught my taste buds at first sip? I like 'Hoppy' beer? Well I never!

Thanks a million for that one, Bigster! Quite perception altering :D

Why not Dave's way? 1/ I no longer have the book. 2/ Are not at least the very vastest majority of his methods Dark Side? I have limitations and so am, for now at least, content to use basic kits.

Guess I now just need pointing towards a " Hop, Hop, Hoppy " brew in kit form?

This one's been noticably slow. I thought I'd actually gottcha all with it. But I'd imagine plenty out there will know Extra Hoppy taste making kits? Looks like that's what I'm after

Thanks again, mate. Blinder!

Hi

I missed that this was in the kit section

To me kits lack the hop flavour and are often too bitter for me. You could get some hops and dry hop a kit which could give you the hop flavour and aroma without adding any bitterness.

Hi Ditch,
Good to see you on here and thanks for pointing out this site on THL.
The information on here is invaluable to me.
Good luck with the coopers stout, my mate says coopers kits with the upgrades and additions are second to none.

Hullo, Shepp! Great here, isn't it? I've just done THL and have now opened another Tab and shall spend the rest of my time, till the very early hours, flitting between the two! I now have Two 'main fora'!

Absolutely gagging to get rolling, mate. Only I costed my initial needs last night and, well ..... I mean, I'm sure anyone else could come at it from another angle and need to pay a quarter of what I'm looking at. But, having done it before, I already have some set ideas on how I like to go and what it needs to do it my way. Plus I have the enviromental factors to deal with. All mounts up!

Never mind. I have the rest of the day ahead of me to dwell on it with a clear head. I just need to decide which of my little investments to let go to who. Then I can get the munge and seemlessly forge ahead.

Can't wait to get the " Fermenting / Conditioning / Drinking! " bit on my own Signature!

I haven't had the Ruddles County, so don't know what the taste is like, but if it's hoppy you want.....

The Brewferm Trippel is a lovely drink - though double up, as I think it only makes either 9 or 12 litres a time. I've still got the odd bottle of this left, from 9 months ago - not because i don't like it, but because these brewferm brews get better with age!!!

Also, I did an Admirals Reserve, and dry hopped, for a fortnight in secondary, with 25g of Fuggles, before kegging. Boy, has it got a hop taste with it, but not to its detriment! Mighty tasty pint.

Good luck with your choice :)

Yes Ditch I have two tabs on the go the same as you mate.
It's a fasinating thing brewing, i've been interested in it for years.
There is such scope for variations in flavours with the different sugars and hops you can add. That's without even touching on extract and all grain.
I'm even considering growing some hops up a new bit of trellis i've put up :D .
I may give the stout a go next

Ruddles county is brewed with Bramling X hops.

If it's something along this line that you're thinking of and you're a kit brewer, then I would recommend getting a premium bitter kit and a packet of these hops and follow the kit enhancement advice you'll find on this forum.

All the best - County is a great beer!

Excellent intelligence on the hops there, guys! Most grateful. And who'd have thought it, eh? I'd probably have ended up throwing all sorts of malt at things and never once bothered with hops! I honestly thought hops made the bitterness ](*,)

No connessuire, see. Just like what I like :)
