which stout to do

Post by pongobilly » Thu Apr 03, 2008 10:05 am

i am wanting to get a stout going today but cant decide which to do, i have been trying to ring the milestone brewery shop to see if they have any black pearl kits in(which would be my first choice) but no answer, could go to wilko and pick up a edme stout, or i could go to the hbs and pick up a coopers stout, im not holding much hope for the milestone kit which is a shame really as eventually there wont be any, but if i do manage to get to milestone i will ask a few questions regarding the kits and whether they are gonna dissapear

If you're heading up near Sheffield/Chesterfield at all, the Milestone kits are on offer at Brewmart in Woodseats, Sheffield for £13.99. Not sure about stock though. They also do free delivery on orders over £60.

I have a Coopers Stout which is currently ready for bottling, it smells very nice, but I can also recommend the John Bull Masterclass Irish Stout which I thought was very good indeed, especially after a couple of months.

As for Milestone, the shop is not always staffed, especially when they are doing a market - and they might be on Southwell market today. If Diamalt was to stop making the kits for them, I would think that they would be looking for someone else to make them as they are quite popular.

Just to clarify, the one I did was the 3KG Masterclass kit, I haven't tried the standard Stout kit.

I also did a Brupaks 'Brewer's Choice' Irish Stout kit after that, and to be honest I preferred the JB, which was a lot cheaper.

I did the chocolate stout from Flagon and Cask and it was ok. Bit odd though.

I hear Coopers do a mean stout if you can find it.

The Hop Shop advertise as having Cooper's Stout and I cannot praise their mail-order services highly enough!

I did a Cooper's after Christmas and primed with Black Treacle - very nice.

I've got a Montmellick Stout to do but I can't comment on taste yet.

I bought a Black Pearl kit on Sat in Glenbrew in Glasgow, bit far to travel , but they sell online as the Inn House Brewery, they had loads of Milestone kits left , I think they bulk bought after the news of the shutdown, just leave some for me

I have drunk my way through a batch of Black Pearl. Was a nice brew, burnt overtones and very tasty. Gave me terrible wind though !

Another vote for Cooper's Stout here, did it with a kilo of dark spray malt and dryhopped with 5g Fuggles. Twas yummy, very smooth and dry and bags of body, i'd use more dryhops next time tho (10g maybe) as 5g made bugger all difference and it was lacking a little in complexity. Strange thing out of the bottle it had no head/little carbonation at all for a good month or two..
