Rehydrating Yeast

Post by goochio » Thu Apr 10, 2008 10:37 am

Started my John Bull Brown Ale kit last night. Using the instructions on the site for the first time.
Anyway i had got some muntons gold yeast which i hydrated (30 Deg sprinkled on etc) nothing happened. Tried again with the kit yeast, bit of action but wasn't foaming. Decided to stick it in anyway after aerateing the wort.
Had a look this morning but i would'nt say its frothy. Just bubbles rising to the surface. Should I be concerned. Is it worth going to the home brew shop at lunctime to get some more yeast.
What happends if you put more in - can you put too much in?

My John Bull Masterclass Chocolate Stout took 24 hours to form a decent Krasuen - and I pitched yeast vit with the yeast.

Is it too late to use the yeast vit. Might nip and get some and some more yeast at lunchtime.

Is it worth leaving it until 24 hours until I stick some more yeast.

Don't think it'd hurt waiting until 24hrs had passed and then repitching inc vit if nothing's started

I know i sound like an expectant father, I have high hopes on this one...

Right checked it last night and still no frothy head. Seems to be plenty of action in that plenty of bubbles rising to the top etc. Checked this morning and took a hydro reading of 1030. Does this sound good?
Brought some endzyne yesterday as well as some more yeast just in case.

Again apologies for my lack of experience!

Assuming an opening gravity in the region of 1.040 it sounds like you're dropping; maybe it's just a slow ferment?

Right now I'm confused.
Yesterday decided to repitch the wort as nothing looked like it was happening. So rehydrated the yeast as per instructions, pitched the wort whilst i was waiting (trying to rouse the existing yeast etc). Added the yeast and added some brupaks beer enzyme at the same time. Bingo all seemed to be working. Check last night had a good yeast head etc.

Checked it this morning - flat as a pancake. No bubbles, really cloudy etc. Have I killed it! Is it worth rousing again or give it more time?

looking at the muntons site it states you should sprinkle onto the wort at 20deg not 30 that you said in your first post. You may be killing the yeast before pitching, but if you have bubbles coming up that would suggest that there is yeast activity.

Just checked it again. The head has come back again! How wierd is that!
Took a reading as well i'd say its between 1006 and 1010. (The froth is obscuring the markings on the hydrometer)

What caused that then - was it the oxygen from when i checked earlier.

Obviously no point barreling yet as theres still action. Is it likely that the reading will drop further?

Woodfordes say rehydrate your yeast at 40-45degrees so it should be alright.
