wort loss to hops

Post by prolix » Tue May 13, 2008 12:46 am

search gave me 103 pages of results so stuff that. How much wort do hops use up? I have seen it before and no doubt in a sobe state I could find it again but help a bloke out and save me from "you can not make another search so soon wait another ten years"

David Edge was asked that same question at the November meeting in Chelmsford.

Minutes (with that answer) can be found by following the shedbrewers link in my signature.

I have no idea, but make sure you check the 'search all terms' button under the search box. I only get 39 matches then.

for what it's worth, I made a big IPA last year with 300g of Goldings. After chilling etc I put the drained hops in my old mash tun overnight to allow any remaining wort to drain out. There was about 2 litres of wort present the next morning which I added to the fermentation vessel.

I've repeated this exercise when making IPA since as there's always a litre or two of recoverable wort in the hops. I haven't measured it directly but my feeling is that there's about 0.75 litre in 100g of hops.

Russell.
