seal spraying out lager

Post by mrtboy64 » Wed May 28, 2008 11:11 am

just opened a keg of lager last night the head on the pint was great but not much fizz to my liking for a lager, so i decided to pop a 8 mg co2 in and then beer started to spray out of the bottom tap where the rubber seal is, so i loosend the cap on the barrel to let the pressure out and it stopped, then i pulled another pint off it was flat so i put another co2 in same thing happened, so then i let the pressure out of the rubber seal at the top of the co2 valve and it stopped leaking pulled another pint off there was a head on, but not much fizz do i have to wait a few days for the co2 to get in the beer.

I'm guessing it's a cheapy wilko's special? I have/had same problem here. I think it was caused by a dodgy valve.

When mine starts to spray it's usually after a few days in secondary. I have changed the valve and am gonna prime it with less sugar this time round using 50g instead of 80g. The barrel however is fine after a few pints have been drawn off and can be topped up no problem with C02. I have a Boots barrel with exactly the same type of tap and lid and it is the same shape and have no issues with it at all. The only thing I have noticed is that the seal on the Boots barrel seems to be seated better in the resess than on the Wilko's barrel.

If your barrel is the same as mine (cheap 2" neck) there is no back nut and tightening the tap as much as you dare should do the trick, re-pressurise and if it's still coming out of the seal with the lid tight lay the barrel on it's back so the tap is free from any liquid, take it out, clean it off, put Vaseline on the seal and re-tighten it up, gently roll back onto it's base and re-pressurise, if all else fails get another barrel as they are only £20

Yes I know my punctuations sucks but I had lots to say

You might think about upgrading your taps. I had this problem with the standard taps.
Or you could save yourself the hassle and upgrade to corni kegs.
The same happened to me, I had to do CyberPaddy said and fanny about with it.. Of course the beer oxidised straight away :(
