Most likely it is propylene glycol alginate. Its an emulsifying agent and thickener that aids in head retention.
I've tried it in the past with kits, and it seems to work OK. Also aids in mouthfeel, presumably because it's literally thickening your brew.

What's the difference then between 'Body Brew' and 'Yeast Food and Heading Compound' (Young's product). This is used "to ensure correction of nutrient deficiencies in wort and improve head retention in beer". The ingredients for this are: Kelcoloied Ester, Vitamins and Trace Elements. Ammonium Sulphate Ammonium Phosphate.
Sounds like they do the same kind of thing, attract mug punters into buying something that really aint necessary. Anyway, as I've already got some (still don't know why I bought it) I'm going to chuck a bit into my Porter this evening.
