Brewing today. Recently changed from using a coverted f/v as a mash tun to a picnic cool box one. Can`t beleve how slow the run off is. I have seen other posts that state this is a good thing but at the moment it`s been 2 hours of a faint trickle. Have added some extra slits to the manifold but still slow, Is this nomal for these m/t`s, any ideas to speed it up a bit. The old way use to take about 1 hour.

There's no reason why your run off should be any slower with a cool box mt. Was there a lot of flour in your grist? This can cause a stuck mash. Is your tap opening properly?

Grain seems ok. Tried tap in a few positions, read on this site it is best not to fully open.

Fully open the tap. It may have a slight block. This will clear it and it'll run better.

Try blowing backwards to unclog the manifold

This may sound silly but I was getting slow runoff with my old picnic cool box. What it turned out to be was that I was shoving the small plastic tubing that connected the manifold to the tap too far up the manifold at the t-piece and restricting the flow through the manifold.

I have to ensure that the end of the hose stays near the top of the surface of the wort otherwise the run off slows right down.

Have you tried it with just plain water, to see if you get a good fast flow ?

manifold slits should be about 1 cm apart and sawn about 1/3 to 1/2 way through. If you are still having trouble after this, it could be your grains.

Did you have a lot of water above the grain bed?

Was thinking this today. Was more than usual this time to get temperature right. This never a problem in the old m/t.
