Why are all my brews getting stuck?

Discuss making up beer kits - the simplest way to brew.

Aren't Coopers Australian? And how about " Tom Caxton "?
Just done a WHOIS on the Tom Caxton website
Whois info for, tomcaxton.com:
Registrant:
Muntons PLC
Cedars Maltings
Stowmarket
none
None, Suffolk IP14 2AG
GB
Domain name: TOMCAXTON.COM

It is one of these brands that Muntons took over.

Coopers probably is imported though.

Got a Coopers Stout kit in front of me just now.

Coopers Brewery
461 South Road
Regency Park
South Australia 5010

So yup must be imported, may be by Muntons?

Yes, the Cooper's kits are definitely manufactured in Aus and imported, as well as the Toohey's and Castlemaine kits AFAIK.

I believe the Black Rock kits are malted and canned in NZ, and imported here too.

Quite frankly, if I was Coopers, considering that malt extract is malt extract, and that a recipe is a recipe (Does Australia grow decent two-rowed barley?), I would contract Muntons to make my "European" kits to save transporting them half-way round the world.

There is at least one brand that people assume is imported, and the brand is owned by a foreign company, but their kits are all made in Britain, even those consumed in the particular mother country.

Who knows what goes on behind labels on tins in the world of business. I am pretty sure that Tesco's do not make their own baked-beans, but it is Tesco's address on the tin.

I once opened 2 tins of Tesco baked beans only to find that they had fermented. maybe Muntons make them too...

Interesting thread, apologies for length of the following:

1 Every kit I've done (including geordie bitter) has needed rousing to finish. With some I've added yeast nutrient before stirring, but they've all finished a bit high. Maybe the water's too alkaline, would it be worth adding a bit of citric acid?

2 I'm a bit 'scientifically challenged' - why does every tin of the same size have to have the same og?

3 Surely munton's can manage different recipes - I don't cook curry for every meal on my one cooker (not for breakfast) (well only sometimes)

4 I've never got the 'everyone used to make their own bread/beer/cheese/wine/horsehair mattresses so it can't be hard to do it well' argument. When I was little my parents were regularly given lovingly-baked victoria sandwich cakes (by grateful customers). The majority were just terrible - undercooked, over cooked, both( :? ), weird buttericing, and most often just poorly washed tins or maybe other utensils (hands?) which gave them that 'dirty oven' taste. I'm not a great cook but I can make a bloody good victoria sandwich - and I think it's easy - but all those perfectly normal bakers couldn't! rant over - sorry!

I know for a fact that Shippams used to produce Marks and Sparks 'Cock o' vin'

Come on now, Graham; Spill the beans. What firm are ye alluding to there?

Talking of beans:

" Fermented ". " Muntons ". In the same breath? Contradiction in terms, surely to god?

Funnily enough, I Do make curry for every meal. Only I use my Slow Cooker. But, result is that I can make a mean curry with my eyes closed these days. How come Muntons are going for world domination of the global malt market, and yet turning out such dire crap?

Well I don't feel so hard done by after reading this thread.

I've just done my first kit after 5 years of AG brewing and went for Muntons Smugglers Ale.

FG 1012 with everything straight from the box and no rousing.

Admittedly, I would have preferred a few points lower, but what the heck - it tastes very decent, if slightly on the sweet side.

I might bung in 100g of white sugar on the next one - just to dry it up a touch.

If i could get my next kit to 1012 i'd be smiling from ear to ear!
