Bad times a brewing

Post by BlightyBrewer » Sat Aug 23, 2008 12:55 pm

I'm having a rubbish time with brewing at the moment. One batch developed a metallic taste (I dumped it - first time I have ever done this :cry:), and another has a stuck ferment at 1.020. Tried another yeast starter which did nothing. Will have to get some beer enzyme and yeast nutrient, but I can't be as$ed to travel 40 odd miles to the HBS for a couple of sachets costing £2, and I'm not going to pay the £4 P&P to the online HBS either for £2 worth of supplies. All in all I'm pi$$ed off! :evil:

Ah, that's better, got that off my chest. :wink:

I'm in awe of AG brewers... the next brew that works will be 10 times as wonderful due to these bumps in the road :)

Tell me about it. I've just discovered that both barrels of beer I have are off. :cry:

And I have people coming over this afternoon.

I'm blaming the heat in the garage over June/July where they were stored as I've never had that happen before, mainly cos I don't usually brew that late in the year.

Good job I got a few cans in just in case (the shame of it!) :oops:

At least I have half a dozen bottles of decent HB left from last winter's brewing cycle.

Time to get brewing!

BB, your brew isn't on the cool side is it? Just wonder why the second yeast pitch didn't do anything?

I'm available for psychotherapy regarding this illness. I have first hand experience of what this can do to a man. Get yourself together son, and keep brewing. My tips below for quality brewing:

1. Clean and sterilize everything. Be sure everything is nice and clean.

2. Pitch a great deal of yeast cells into a cooled wort. Quick start time equates to clean beer!

Good advice but also remember;

1a) Rinse! Yes you've steralised but unless you've used a non-rinse steriliser rinse, rinse and rinse again. Way to easy to get sloppy about this.

3) Temperature. A big one. Even thou there weather may seem crap recently my house was hitting 25C during the day last month, hence no brewing for me.

Still keeping my eye out on freecycle for a decent fridge in order to get around point 3.

Had same prob this week; 20mile round trip to HBS costs a bomb in petrol so ordered yeastvit and yeast from www.hopshopuk.com. They charge £2 for delivery by 1st class snail mail for small items and turned up the following morning. Never been so pleased to see the postie.
