Chocolate Treacle Stout - 03/09/08

Post by Buzz » Tue Sep 02, 2008 4:54 pm

How time flies. It seemed it was only the other week this recipe came around in the newsletter and I thought I'd give it ago. That was Autumn 2007...

About time I cracked on with it then. I'm gonna get this on tomorrow (Wednesday). It wont be an early start, going to stay chilled and relax. I'll upload pics as the day progresses;

5.5kg Pale Malt
510g Roasted Barley
255g Wheat Malt
170g Chocolate Malt

60 min mash @ 68deg
60 min boil;
100g Northdown (6%) 60 min
300g Treacle 20 min

23L @ 1056 is the target.

Buzz, you'll love this recipe, it works great, it's even better after a couple of months maturing. I bottled mine.

Done it three times now and got excellent results every time. The treacle in the boil smells divine.

Have a great one... :D

What yeast did you use Buzz & Garth? Keep meaning to try this one.

Ah, I forgot to list the yeast. I'm going to use S-04 as it's what I've got in. Do you think I'll getaway with one packet or would two be safer?

Myst, I used S-04 each time, I reckon it keeps it a bit sweeter than Nottingham would

Buzz, I'd maybe go for two being a bit of a higher gravity brew

That's what I was thinking. Thanks Garth, looking forward to this one tomorrow.

I brewed this last Sept and found one last bottle in a forgotten crate 2 weeks ago, still in perfect condition and tasted superb.

SWMBO has a wicked recipe for chocolate beer cake that uses half pint of stout. You guessed it - half for the cake and half for me :wink:
If anyone's interested i'll post the cake recipe, it's the best choc cake i've every tasted. 8)

Hope your brew goes ok.

Me and the Mrs are always partial to a bit of chocolate cake. And, if it's got beer in, so much the better. Let's have it MB :D

Okay on with the beer. Had to do some work this morning and got done earlier than I thought so the water is on for the mash. Ingredients ready to go;

It's nice to have a dedicated boiler now but, I still use the old Bruheat boiler with the mashing bag for mashing
