Self 'Over Carbonation' In Keg. Remidies?

Post by Ditch » Wed Sep 03, 2008 11:40 pm

:-k It's my Wherry.

Ok, quick, potted history ~ because I don't remember the details myself, but ~ It never did get down to any proper SG, in fact, it stuck, like shit to a blanket. So, needing to move on, I kegged it anyway. No 'Priming'. Just straight in.

It's had a good week of sitting there and, being flat broke for a few days right now ..... Ye know what happens ....!

Must say; Last nights few pints had a 'Tang'. Yet only 24 hours later I'm only finding it a bit 'Fruity' for my own tastes. I'm now on my third 3/4 pint and must admit; It Does. Not something I'd buy a second pint of in a pub, obviously. But, am I coming across as a man with a complaint?

Only little bug bear is it's somewhat OTT liveliness as I pour one. I'm getting just over half a pint of rather cloudy, but still not unpleasantly dark amber, beer. Then the rest is thick head. Can't blame the brew, considering the shit we gave each other. Just wondering:

If I open the keg lid, will that release some of this surplus CO2? And, if so; Should I then give it a tiny burst, to re cover the beer?

I don't like fizzy beer - which this isn't. But it's a bind filling a glass and then waiting for two inches plus of foam to dissipate.

Anyone?

I wouldn't open the lid, far better just to release the gas via the PRV and leave it overnight, that should be sufficient to reduce the carbonation I would imagine and without risk to the ale. :)

 Bloody good thinking, that man! I'll give that a spin.

Only ..... I think I'll do that tomorrow  Good god! Under three pints of the stuff and I already don't quite feel up to anything as 'complicated' as pinching a rubber band!

I know the feeling, so easy to get carried away and bugger things up after a few, all caution goes to the wind. I have a lovely tasting beer that has the clarity of the smog at the Beijing Olympics. I decided that it would be a good idea to chuck a sachet of finings into the cornie. Nope, I didn't premix or anything, took lid off, chucked it in. Two days later I'm wondering why it's still foggier than a humid morning on the North Yorkshire Moors.

Fortunately, the beer still tasted good last time I tried, even if it did look like sludge. Still, it's not been touched for nearly a week now and I'm heading back home tomorrow so who knows. :) Moral of story, don't rush in to fix a problem after one too many as you may have bigger problems than when you started. :(

But what's " Makers Mark " ? One of ye own concoctions? Certainly not a whiskey I've ever heard of.

Anyway, I'm newly chuffed to bits now! ( Bent Thread coming up! Sorry!) Mate of mine e mailed me, probably in the last night or two, asking how to trap a thing that'd been raping his ground with impunity for Ever.

He just couldn't get in rifle shot of it before it spotted him, gave the fingers and vanished.

So, I told him how to set and bait the right trap, last night. He's just this minute reported back that, on driving by, he saw the bugger sniffing around the trap! And it was now within range  Clean shot and end of problem!

I'm only sorry he didn't come by half an hour later. Then he'd have found the bugger sitting in his cage and I'd have become a legend in that guys mind!

Job done. That's the important thing.

Just to report I've gone in and used a handy pair of tweezers to tug the rubber band out. Just slipped one arm inside and levered it away.

Lot of gas came out and I poured a crafty half. Tis looking a lot better. Presently I'll pour off a whole pint and see how it goes. I have CO2 on hand, should I have over done it.

Must say; It's incredible what a difference even a day's making to that beer. Yesterday it 'Did', because I had nothing else. Today? There's really not that much wrong with it. I'd let a mate taste it. Still a bit 'Fruity' for my own palette. I won't be brewing it again. But, hey; I have beer! :D

It's not whiskey - it's bourbon, calling it whiskey would be like calling budweiser beer ;)

Ditch you crack me up mate; I thought you meant you'd stuck an ARM in the barrel! Im thinking, Christ there wont be much point in fiddling with the rubber band if hes unscrewed the cap and stuffed a paw in to get at the wrong rubber inside.

No need for twizzers tho, cos tif theyre sharp they can nick the band then youre buggered. Just pinch the band either side of the vent hole on the peg and it will release.

Google Makers Mark (and Woodford Reserve while your at it). If you can barter yerself a bottle of either you wont be uhappy.
