Priming in a bucket

Post by verno » Mon Sep 29, 2008 11:02 am

All, last night I was bottling my second batch. This time rather than prime in the bottles I decided to buy another FV and prime into that. The problem I have is that I didn't really leave myself enough time last night and I realised this morning that I didn't give the mixture a good stir. Basically I poored the boiled sugar solution into the bottom of the FV and then siphoned the beer ontop.

My concern is that I am doing a pilsner which called for 8g per litre. Given that is already quite high, if the sugars didn't mix throughout the whole FV then I potentially have exploding bottles. Whilst siphoning I did try to ensure it mixed and I then gave it a good 45 mins to settle, but I didn't ever do a proper stir. Do you think I have valid concerns. If so, should I just watch my bottles (I used PET ones).

Thanks

Sounds exactly the same procedure as I use.

Put boiled sugar solution into bottom of FV and siphon the beer on top.

I don't stir and I don't even wait for any settling. Once transferred it then just goes into the bottles.

I've never had any problems and carbonation always seem to be even for all bottles in the batch.

I'd say it will be fine.

Cheers Bob, that gives me some piece of mind. I guess the siphoning mixes it all around.

same here - the swirling effect of syphoning seems to distribute the solution nicely.

Yes, as said above, it'll be fine.

More of a problem would be if you put the sugar syrup into the beer - it would sink to the bottom.

Glad your raised that Sparky, I will ensure I don't do that in the future.

I have high hopes for this Coopers pilsner. When I was taking the hydro readings it was a nice straw colour and the taste was much better than my last batch at that stage.

I just hope it conditions out ok, only 2 weeks to wait....
