Siphoning

Post by randomdave » Thu Oct 09, 2008 11:27 am

This might seem like a bit of a silly question really but hey ho, id rather ask and get it right than not ask and cock up.

I have a siphon with my kit that has a plastic tube about 1cm diameter with a smaller tube on the inside. this is about a foot long and then from the end of that it goes into a U shape with a spring wrapped around the rubber tubing (the spring holds it in the U shape) the rubber tubing is then about a meter in length.

So the daft question then. Which end do i stick in the bucket? the foot of plastic tube, or the meter of rubber tube? oh yeah the plastic part has a cap that i can stick on the end too.

thanks in advance. :D

I would offer up to the outside of your FV both ends of the tube ie one way up then the other. Whichever has the spring loaded bit most conviently situated at the top of the FV place the shorter end into your brew then siphon. Sounds like the rubber bit is designed to take a bottling stick! The plastic cap goes into the brew also and should sit on the yeast cake thus hopefully preventing any sediment being drawn into the siphon tube itself, you may have to play around with the spring so that just enough siphon sits in your brew and doesn't bed itself into the yeast itself.

after a better inspection of the siphon i now understand how it works and you cant really get it the wrong way round as one end doesnt fit in a bottle. Probably should have played with it a bit more before posting ^^
