Re: Brewday 09 Aug 2008 - Ushers 1883 Stout
My god, I missed an awful lot of activity on this thread
I think the brewday was something like 10:30 ish to 20:00 ish . . . possibly a bit later, but we were in no hurry . . . apart from when the beer ran out
. . . We did bottle 18 Gallons of beer as well, but don't wash the bottles as its more effective to buy new ones, they just got a spray of peracetic and drained on the bottle tree . . . yes the same sort as we have at home. And they were capped with a twin lever capper . . . Phil must invest in a Bench capper next time
. . . . And yes it was a very sociable event . . . read all about it in the next issue of Brewers Contact . . . What Not a Member of the Craft Brewing Association Well Join up and read all about it
As Steve pointed out, this is a commercial plant, although we did run the chilled wort into the 5BBL bright beer tank from Beerblokes Home brewery setup for final cooling and aeration.
Yeast was Crouch Vale that was collected by Gurgeh the day before . . . as Phil had pitched his into 2.5BBL of Bitter a couple of days earlier. IIRC
I would suspect that as usual the CV yeast would have quite happily crawled all over the FV and made a lovely mess. Beer Bloke did tell us that unusually the yeast gave up the ghost and stuck at 1.020 . . . so he gave it a stern talking to, roused it, and pitched another L of fresh slurry . . . and it worked out.
What did it taste like . . . No idea, as I didn't take any wort away with me, due to the car being full of grain
. However A cask or two went on the bar at the local Tractor/Agricultural show and sold out in very short order . . . which was a surprise for me as I wouldn't have expected a strongly flavoured beer to sell that well . . . Still Young Farmers you know, and from Essex as well
I'd keep a lookout for a Historical Ales Series from the Wibblers Brewery, those bottles will be worth sampling
Cheers Phil

Durden Stoat was on sale at the CAMRA Chappel Festival 9th-13th September, So around a month . . . . Durden park reckon on 2-3 months . . . . Although it apparently sold out in around half an hour
. . . I believe it also went down rather well at the Tractor Fair at the Farm on the 7th

I really like the whitbread London porter, I think the Ushers will have to be my next stout
