Pump. Centrifugal??

Im still in the process of slowly setting up my new micro brewery sytem.

Im going to have the Mash Tun higher than the boiler so i can garviy feed the boiler from the mash tun.

Im gonna need a pump to pump from the HLT into the mash tun, and then from the boiler to the FV.

Im sure i heard one of you say it has to be a centrifugal pump and im assuming thats because the pump should have no liquid in it at the the start and then suck in the liquid and shove it out from where ever i pump it from. Is this correct?

and if so what pump is recomended?

(i know this has been asked hundereds of times...)

Agreed, I have the March 809 and it's fantastic, pump around boiling wort until your heart is content.

Basically you have the pump below your HLT (or boiler or MLT), have it connected via silicone tubing or copper piping, open your ball valve on your pot completely open and allow the pump to prime via gravity, then restrict the outflow with another ball valve.

I use mine to pump from the MLT to the copper (slowly while fly sparging), then again at the end of the boil to recirculate the wort around the immersion chiller, and then from the boiler to the FV. The recirculation helps speed up the chilling and also sanitises the pump, and also helps keep the break material out of your FV.

I believe you can get one directly from March May, Aleman did you say something about that?

You'd have to check what temperature liquids that ebay one will handle, search for Vossy's thread reviewing common pumps. The March 809 is the Rolls Royce for HB'ers though.

That's a Totton GP20, it has a max temp of 85C. I got one after positive feedback
from Andy and Seveneer. It's a great pump but not sure it would suit your application
if you're pumping boiling wort.

I use a plate chiller between the boiler and the pump so I never need to pump boiling wort. The only time I get close to the limit of the GP20/12 is when I sparge. I'm then using 80C liquor.

If the extra money for the March is a concern I wouldn't worry about the heat rating of the Totton pump. I've been using mine for years now and they're good as new.

Ive contacted MarchMay and their £89 + £12.50 P&P + Vat.

Was about to get the cheque book out too.

The boiling wort wouldnt prob be an issue for me either as i was going to lob my IC in the wort after boiling to bring it down to temp and then pump to the FV. But it was the sparge temp and the fact MarchMay said theirs was suitable for running caustic cleaning liquids also that had me sold.

I run hot caustic through mine with no detrimental effects.

That's a good price for a March pump though. Given the price of the Totton currently from Norm or elsewhere I'd take the March.

My pumps were about 27 quid each before the supplier got inundated by homebrewers and put the price up so there was no contest

As it will easily handle your sparge temp, at 1/2 the price all in I would say
the pump from Norm was the better buy

I would guess that this is caused by the crash of the pound agianst the dollar . . . I know that Cisco are now only guaranteeing quotes for 24 hours for exactly the same reason. Just sent my cheque off . . . I may get a totton from Norm later on

blimey well i sent my cheque this morn for the price he quoted me at £89...

Cheque was posted at lunchtime on Wednesday . . . pump was on my desk at 10:00 on Friday.

Initial thoughts were that the thing just wasn't 'finished' . . . of course I have been rather spoiled with the RG550 which is built like a brick sh*thouse. While I have splashed wort and water around and over the RG550 there is no way I would do so with the March may 809 . . . a very exposed motor coil assembly for one thing . . . . Be interesting to see what its like when powered up and rocking
