POPPED MY AG CHERRY, PRIMARY FERMENTER QUESTION

Post by ADDLED » Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:07 pm

Ive conquered the fear and done my first AGs; Old Spot Prize Ale 1.070 last Wed 29th and London Pride 1.050 (came out a bit higher than anticipated) at the weekend and Im well pleased. :D

I made notes in advance and kept referring to the forum so the the brewdays were pretty much trouble free. Apart from forgetting to shut the tap on the boiler when I filled it from the HLT and ketting a warm feeling on the inside leg that I havent had since 3 years old, there were no major hassles.

Theyre in barrel FVs in my kitchen at an ave temp of 22 degrees-ish. Both started off well with the Hogs Back brewery yeast, dropped really quickly, the Old Spot lingered around 1.018 for a couple of days but theyre both at the 1.010 mark today.

I was wondering, since theyre both almost fermented out, can I move them to the garage for the next week to finish the primary and clear up a bit? Its been around 10 degrees for the past few days and its looking pretty similar for the rest of the week. Will it do them more good to be in the cool?

Yep, I'd agree too. Mine's actually in the fridge to help it clear as I don't yet have the luxury of a garage or shed but with the addition of another 5 cornies I'm definitely gonna have to get a shed installed.

How will that work out in regards to natural carbonation? I did this with a batch of Barley Wine and had to re-introduce fresh yeast, mind you it was out in the cold for a few months rather than a week.
