Post by Carpking » Mon Nov 17, 2008 5:49 pm

Hi Guys.
I know theres a thread for this in the tap room, but theres the serious business of the recipe...
I'm thinking of finding a porter recipe i like and adding some fresh coffee and hazlenut syrup but i dont know how much or when to add it, thats where you guys come in...
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I think these things are pretty much trial and error. If nobody else has tried it I would suggest maybe splitting the batch into 4 and trying differing amounts to see what you like best then next time you will know. Maybe start with 1/4 cup per gallon and work up in 1/4 cup increments, I suppose it depends on how strong the flavouring is though.

I guessed around 1 cup of coffee into a 5 gallon batch would be a good start. Splitting the batch is a good idea. I have a bottle of hazlenut syrup from my lhbs, and its that that i have no idea how much to add. Perhaps an e-mail to saltaire brewery, they may give me a hint of how much....

Depending on the recipe you may not need any coffee, My Titan stout has a distinctive coffee flavour from the Black malt.
