First Timer, explosive results......

Post by CyanideMint » Sat Nov 22, 2008 2:10 pm

First of, wish I had found this site a couple of days ago...... Ok, bought a Kit. Coopers Draught. I had a glass 23 litre carboy so I decided to try and make my beer in this. Everything looked good last night but this morning my brew has such a head that foam pushed its ways into the water lock (now a beer lock) and is continuing to grow and foam out of the water lock. I guess the good thing is that its fermenting right?

Any suggestions? I'm just going to stick with it, hopefully the foam will subside soon. The brew is in the basement which is cold, I wrapped an electric blanket around the carboy and the temp looks to be around 28 degrees... too hot? Should I invest in a bucket instead of the glass carboy?

Anyways, whatever happens its been fun so far, I'll try again if this out doesn't turn out.

Thanks guys.

Cheers.

Im not sure about anything else, but 28 degree's im pretty sure will cook your yeast, you want it to float around 19 degrees ideally. You can invest in either a brewbelt, or a immersion heater.

Good luck though + Welcome!

Crap, ok electro off. With this overly warm brew, do you think its ruined? How do you think the end product will be affected? Since this is my first time brew, Im going to continue with it for education sake.

Why do I have visions of choking down 3 cases of crap beer?

Thanks guys!

Well, personally i would say check the gravity for a couple days in a row, if it seems not to be doing anything, you killed your yeast and you'd probally need to re-pitch.

+I reckon it,ll be fine, you havent cooked the yeast if its escaping out the airlock, just try and keep it about 20 degrees and see where it ends up, probably will turn out better than you was hoping and you won,t make that mistake again

Just a small update, temp now holding around 20 degrees, fermenter is still bubbling so looks like my yeast buddies are still alive. Thanks again everyone.
