Cheapest home brew online

Post by Frank N Stein » Fri Nov 28, 2008 3:15 pm

Could anybody please point me in the direction of the cheapest online site for buying a basic home brew kit comprising of the can of malt with hop extract and a sachet of yeast.

The sites I have been able to find have their prices within pennies of each other if not exactly the same!!

The site I usually buy from have put the price of their basic kit up from £4.49 to £6.99 since the last time I bought it

Trouble with buying cheap kits online is that they charge a lot for the postage. Wilkos are the best bet.

http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/

Just do a search for 'home brew'

Find your local store then go in and buy what you need. May be an idea to ring them first as i'm not sure if all stores stock home brew kit?

When i asked for the URL I wasn't aware that Wilkos is an abbreviation for Wilkinson. Sorry!

They charge £4.95 for delivery, but don't state if they have free delivery if you spend over say £60 for example.

I would love to be able to go to my local store, but unfortunately they don't have any stores in Scotland, that's why I didn't know what the first poster was referring to when he said "Wilkos."

I have been a customer of an online shop that I will not name for the last 5 years, sometimes spending over £150 on a single order. When I phoned to ask why they had sent me cans of 1.5Kg kits in my last order instead of the 1.6Kg cans advertised on their web site the woman slammed the phone down on me.

Needless to say I am loathe to go back near them again, but sad to say they are the cheapest site I have seen!

Welcome to the forum! 8)

It's difficult for us to know whereabouts you are, unless you put it in your profile.

The most competitive suppliers on the internet IMHO are Brewmart and BrewGenie. I've used BrewGenie most of all, and have always found them very helpful, and the service faultless... that's been my experience anyway.

Wilkinsons only stock a limited range, and have put their prices up considerably now, and many items can be found cheaper on the links above... you have to order enough to get the free shipping deal to make it really worthwhile though.

I live in Motherwell.

I have trolled the net looking for shops in Scotland, but none of them seem to have web sites!

I can't even get any in Yelloow Pages. Boots the chemist used to sell the tins of malt extract, but they stopped years ago, that's when I had to start depending on mail order

I don't want to complaint to Trading Standards about being short-measured as described above as I may want to use the facility again if I can't get correspondingly cheap prices, and anyway I have no proof. I should have taken a screenshot of their prices and the weights of the kits they were advertising that I bought!

My location was in my profile, but as you have pointed out it isn't there now. I don't know what happened to it!

I put it in when I registered!

The homebrew shop you're talking about doesn't happen to be based in Edinburgh does it?

No it is not based in Edinburgh or Scotland for that matter of it.

As far as I know no home brew suppliers in Scotland advertise their wares on the internet.

I have a feeling the business I am talking about might have been taken over, or outsiders have joined it, as I had a very good relationship with the man who used to run it. He was a perfect gentleman!

Maybe they don't care now about losing custom :!:

Aaaah, I see.
The one I was thinking about was Edina homebrew based in Edinburgh. They have a website from which you can download their current catalogue. Trouble is their current catalogue is a few years out of date. They're friendly though but, just not the cheapest.
