Bigster Brewday 05/11/2006 - TTL

Post by Bigster » Sat Nov 04, 2006 11:12 pm

Have a few brews I would like to do ( Harveys Sussex Bitter, Cotswold Royal or TTL) .
Tim Brooke Taylor landlord won the honour of being my christmas brew this year as I have recently been drinking this at a local to work pub and getting quite a taste for it..

As my brother in law is buying my recently acquired corni keg for my christmas present I thought it only right that the keg will be ready to serve its first pints on christmas day when he is here.

Bigster Smurf brewery is on blue alert for an earlyish kick off at 7:30am and my eldest son will be the guest brewer tomorrow with just a bit of supervision from me.

2 things slightly different about this brew:
1. Will add a teaspoon of gypsum in the mash tun before adding the grain
2. Have added campden to water for the first time

For the record here is what will be in the brew which is something I picked up from JHBF based on a wheeler recipe:

23 Litres TTL

4.5kg marris otter(Only pale malt stuff I have got)
42g Styrian
35g fuggles
15g goldings ( for last 15 mins of boil )

Onwards and upwards :D

Lets hope the element doesnt go with a bang

Is the marris otter likely to make much difference to the taste rather thank using pipkins or whatever its is ?

Go Kryten :D

Have a great brewday Bigster. Going to be another week before I can do my next brew (wife going on a course in York so I have the house to myself from next Sunday). Going to keep it fairly simple (for a change)

Mighty Mild -

Maris Otter - 4kg
Crystal - 500g
Chocolate - 100g
Fuggle 60min - 25g
Fuggle 30min - 10g
Fuggle 15min - 10g

I might change the hop schedule depending on what I have left - probably throw in some golding as well.

Blue light bulb replaced with green for go :D .

Started on time but mash started 1/2 hour late - not brewed in this temp before and has its different challenges. Bits getting brittle and falling off and thats before I got to the brewing equipment

Should be sparging at 9:15

Good luck PoP with your 'Fuggle Me up landlord' Mild :D

All done.

Two points of interest

BB immersion chiller worked like lightening - 12 mins today but to be expected with 14c tap water I guess

My lad achieved very good efficiency I think as I have 20 litres at 1052 instead of 1042 I thought I was going to get

Ah well christmas will just have to be a little more merry .... :D

12 minutes???? Damn that is fast.

I wouldn't have expected the size to make that much of a difference since by the time the cold water gets around it will already be warm/hot thus having no effect.

I suppose as the wort is chilled it will speed things up though.
