Golden Ghyll

Post by haz66 » Sat Jan 03, 2009 12:14 pm

I had to slightly amend this as i didn`t have as much MO as i thought so had to improvise a little :D
This is what i`ve made.

2kg MO Pale Malt
1.5Kg Lager Malt
300g Wheat
120g Crystal (Just what i had left)
30g First Gold 60mins
20g First Gold 20mins
10g First Gold 0mins

I went for an overnight mash as i`ve got a busy day, i`ve also got to bottle 40 pints of the Fiddlers Elbow Clone (ish) i brewed
on Monday as its now resting at 1007, i hate bottling but do prefer them out of the bottle so gonna have to do it.

I`m just sat here now waiting for the wort to transfer from the boiler to the FV as i`ve still no hop strainer so its taking ages again :( .

I`ve also taken pictures of todays brew day so will put them up once i get a bit of spare time.

Looking good there, Haz. I like how you recycle the warm water from the chiller. I've always dumped mine into the water butt outside, and then turned on the hot tap come the clean up. Which thinking about it is a bit ridiculous.

Hope it turns out well!

Yeah i put some into the mop bucket and some into the washing up bowl, i then use that to wash
all the stuff i`ve used while the wort is transfering to the FV.

You say the wort to hydrate the yeast was taken from the sparge, surely all wort must be boiled?

Now you mention it, yeah it should be boiled first so theres no live germans in there. No wonder his brews smell like vinegar

The bottles actually had Horden Hillbillys lager in them before the wife drunk them, originally they did have becks
in but i`m not guilty of emptying them, i dont mind Hordens lager but i cant stand commercial lager.

It was taken at sparging then boiled in a pan cooled and then the yeast added.

I reckon you can't go wrong with S04 yeast for "normal" beers. It's neutral and very keen!

I always grab 1/2 pint of wort from the boiler when cooled to start the yeast, I then know it's had a hot and cold break and should be very sterile!!
S-04 starts working very quick so after an hour I give wort another stir to aerate it again and throw yeast in...Cracking Stuff :D
