Hi,
I've recently been given a tin of Edme Diastatic Malt Extract and I intend to use it with a Geordie Bitter kit. Can I use it as a substitute for my usual 500gms light spraymalt/500gms Tate & Lyle? Also, it weighs 1.5kg so if I use 1kg what should I do with the remaining 500gms? A final question - does this need to be boiled first or can I merely dissolve it in the fermenting vessel. All answers gratefully received.

use it all and don't bother boiling, just give it a good stir when you add water.
Re: edme malt extract DMS
Your 1.5Kg of liquid malt is about equivalent to 1000g of spraymalt, so as cw says, use it all.
However, diastatic malt extract has to be boiled.
By the way, welcome to the forum!

Thank you both for the advice and welcome - I'll post later when the brew is completed and sampled.

Please could anybody tell me how long I should boil the extract? I'm probably doing a brew this Friday.
Re: edme malt extract DMS
extract doesn't need boiling, just add it straight to the fermenter.
