Fermenting or not?

Post by stevenm » Tue Feb 10, 2009 6:49 pm

I started my second ever kit at the weekend. My first seemed to work fine and is currently in the conservative, hopefully ready for drinking at the weekend. My second kit didnt ferment anything like the first. Although there was some crust like froth on the sides of the bin not alot, and since the bubbles are few and far between in the bin. I put the hydrometer in yesterday and it has moved levels today. Does this mean it is okay?Does this make sense!

Thanks in advance :?

Im having the same worrie's. It's my thirst time :? ! The beer looks flat with next to no bubbles on top, temp is 72 and the SG is now down to around 1010. Thing is I really dont know what I'm looking for? It looks totally inactive to the eye but i guess if the SG is still falling then it must be still fermenting, right? I started it Saturday 7th we are now on the 10th, how much longer should it take? :? I've also read that it can be left in the FV for up to 10days, would this be good practice or are you better to bottle as soon as you think its SG has stableized?

ps stevenm sorry to but-in on your thread but I'm totally new to this and worried that the first time I loose my brewing cherry its going to be wet but not much fun! lol

It sounds fine. If your hydrometer readings are dropping then it means its fermenting. Yeast does funny things, and sometimes you can't see it doing its thing. Be patient and keep taking the readings. :D

If you get a hydrometer reading that hasn't changed over 24 hours (and its not too high) then its finished. If it is still dropping, leave it. I personally bottle no earlier than ten days (unless I am forced to) as this allows the beer to clear and it gives the yeast time to finish up. Hope this helps. :)

Many thanks for those kind words of encuragement and advice =D> :D
I will now chill out a little bit and watch my SG reading till they stablize, I will also take your adivce nofe4r with regards to letting it clear in the FV. I shall keep you informed as to the progress and the final taste and strength. Finger crossed it will be palletable at the very least. (as I say a little pray to the grate god of brewmysters [-o< )
nofe4r a quick question or two; do you think Ive over done it by putting a full 1.5kg of LME in instead of the 500g of sugar and 300g of dextrose? and what affect do you think it will have on the over all outcome of the brew? Your thoughts on this potentiel error of judgement please #-o

quick up date; SG is now down to 1008 :)
The temp had reached a shocking 30  this was with the brew belt around the middle! (will invest in a themostatic submerge type of heater for my next bash), just hope this hasn't ruined the taste  by my reconing I should be looking at bottleing it in just over a week! [-o<
will keep up dating as it goes....... =P~
