unusual smell and taste

Post by rollin danny » Thu Feb 19, 2009 7:43 pm

I did a edme irish stout at Christmas .Ive done it before using brew sugar and it came out great. This time I thought I'd push the boat out and do it with 1kg extra dark malt extract for a special brew. After a couple of weeks in the bottles I thought Id try one  Strange smell and taste that I can only discribe as plastic or polystyrene .I thought it may have been because it was a bit young but I tried one last night and its still the same.Ive used dme with other brews like coopers stout with perfect results so I can only think I was sold a dodgy bag of dme.It was in a plain bag in the brew shop so no best before dates to go on.Has anyone else had similar experience. p.s I drank 2ltr of it anyway ,it certainly gets you pissed

I dont think its going to get any better its been in the cellar for over seven weeks.Anyway it cant be that bad Ive nearly drunk it all  Its just never happened before.I always brew with Lidl's Yorkshire spring water and pride myself on quality homebrew.

Danny

You say you use spring water, do you boil it all or just throw it in, not suggesting that it's anything to do with your problem just investigating whether to give it a try. Have you, or anyone else come to think of it, done a taste comparison ?
