Over carbonated bottles

I vaguely remember a TV show proving that near freezing beer can be just as, if not more violent than warm beer on opening. I'm out of my depth physics-ally so cannot explain why.

Chill-em in the fridge for a good long while then try again.

I am having a similar problem with my Nelson's Revenge; definitely not over-primed but I think they may have been bottled during a stalled fermentation and then continued in the bottle. Not sure what I'm going to do either.
