Kit got to FG in 24hrs?

Post by fastbrew » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:25 pm

Hi, I'm new to homebrewing and just started my first kit yesterday. Woodfordes' Admiral Reserve. The SG was 1044 when adjusted for temperature (I brewed a litre or two less than adveritised to bring the ABV up to what it should be) and the FG is currently at 1010 after only 24hrs! I'm certain all the conditions were good, just a bit worried they were too good and I might have done something wrong.

Expect I'm just being a pessimist but any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

FB

PS I replaced the supplied yeast with Safale04 and brewing temp was 20C.

Are you sure that the fermentation has stopped?

An SG of 1010 should be good for packaging and your brew is at about 4.5% ABV which is above/on the advertised strength I think (unusual for a Woodfordes kit).

Take another hydro reading after 24 hours and see what happens. There's no harm in leaving the beer in the FV for a few days whilst you check.

If there's no further drop in the SG after 2 days then I'd bottle/keg it.

I'm only on my 3rd brew meself, but I've been paying attention to some of the veterans advice on here. There's real depth of knowledge, so you've come to the right place! Perhaps one of the experienced guys has been through this before.

Good luck!

Thanks for the fast reply Dave, I've been lurking on here anonymously for about a week, reading as much as possible before my 1st brew, wanted it to go perfect and it looks like it did.

Thanks to all the 'old-timers' :D for all their pearls of wisdom.

Just can't believe how easy and how quick it was, just 24hrs after all!!!!

No problem FB.

I don't want to p*ss on your chips, but according to some a very fast fermentation can cause bad characteristics in the taste of the beer.

Have you had a sneaky go at it yet? As long as it tastes ok and the fermentation has stopped, I would definitely package it and wait for it to condition for at least a fortnight. You should find with Safale that the beer drops bright quite quickly, but don't be tempted to crack it sooner!

I've just bottled a Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge and by comparison it went from 1046 to 1010 in about 5 days. There are some sages on JBK who go by the "10 day rule", so you can see that your Reserve went like a rocket by any standards.

Let us know how it finishes up.

Cheers

Just took a sneaky taste.

Smells quite banana'ry, tastes a bit like old speckeld hen, and is a sort of whitish amber (I guess the white will disappear during conditioning).

So if it looks like beer, smells like beer and tastes like beer.... Then it must be beer!!!

i find bottling a waste of my time :/ I suffer the problem that I can't condition my beer for much longer than about 10 minutes!

Get it bottled? Get it drunk!

He he he Hoodlum - a man after my own heart.

However, this beer will really benefit from a couple of weeks at least to condition if it's anything like the Woodfordes kit that I have already brewed and drunk.

The secret is to keep brewing and build up a stock so that you aren't tempted to raid the "green" stuff!

The exception to this rule seems to be the Coopers Stout, which from many accounts can be supped straight from the FV after about 2 days

One thing to check is that the hydrometer does not have any dried foam and yeast on it. I leave the hydrometer in the fv to save resterilising all the time, once I put it it when there was still a big head of froth on the top and as it dried on the hydrometer it caused it to sink and give a false low reading. Now I wait till the froth has fully died down before chucking it in.

yeah operator, i was wondering about the hydro myself.
might be worth testing it in 20 degree water.

Well I figured out what went 'wrong'.

The room temp was 20C and because it falls during the night I figured I'd wrap it in a blanket to even out the temp gradient. I overlooked the fact that fermentation gives off it's own heat!

Anyway the beer is still perfectly drinkable so I guess I must have been lucky. :D

Coopers APA next methinks.

Thanks for all the help, this HB lark is great fun, already looking into an AG setup...
