Landlubber (TTL Style) ~ 05Mar09

Mash on!

A TTL style brew, based upon Graham's calculation and my hop reserves, plus a little more aroma on the finish. I'm using homegrown WGV hops for Goldings and Bobek for Styrians, which I'm also adding at flameout to steep. Yeast is either S-04 or S-05 as I have plenty of both.

Here's the recipe anyway. Any comments during the evening very welcome as always.

Looks a little low in colour unless like my beersmith your colour settings are wrong for black malt (mine is something like 1180 ebc but BS has it around 900). And the bitterness seems a little high, it's "supposed" to be 35IBU's according to the book.

Otherwise, a nice looking brew :)

Yes, it's odd that colouring. Graham suggests just 33g of Black Malt. I could still reduce the IBUs, but the mash is nearly done.

Good luck with it!

I would follow GW's recipe as is and rebrew if it needs anything extra. A little extra finishing hops never hurts though

I took 10g of Bobek out of the copper hops to reduce the IBU. other than that, same as recipe above.

Excellent. I have 25L at 1.043 safely in the fermenter. Nothing eventful really - Bobek's were very powdery like leaf tea in parts, but smelled very nice.

Used US-05 in the end, and for the first time, a power drill paddle just for fun.

Nice one 5, thought about using the drill method but after looking at the state my drill is in I thought better of it

Plenty of photos for this brewday are now up online if you can take any more shots of brown stuff in boilers!

This fell below 1.010 and has now been transferred into a clean secondary bucket!
