Ive just got 100g of Cascade hops but ive never used them before. Has anyone got an all cascade recipe they have tried?

I was thinking maybe a pale ale?

Mmmmm.....Cascade

How about something like:

5Kg Pale Malt
250g Crystal
150g Wheat Malt

25g Cascade First Wort
50g Cascade 15 mins
25g Cascade Flame Out

Yeast US-05

Depending on the AA of your hops and your efficiency, that should give you something around 40-45 IBU, and 1.050. I'd aim for around 40 IBU at 1050 to give a 0.8 BU:GU ratio which I like for an American type Pale Ale. If your hops are higher in AA, then scale down accordingly to keep to around 40 IBU and use whatever's left from the 100g to dry hop with....

Cheers mate. Ive only got Nottingham yeast and dont want to place another order just for a couple of packs of US-05 so i may either go with the Nottingham or wait and keep the Cascade until i next place an order.

Can't go wrong with ADM's recipe. Nottingham should be fine, it is quite similar to US-05

Ok cheers lads. Im waiting on a few bits from H&G so ive just mailed them to see if they can tag a US-05 onto the order but if its already been sent ill just use Nottingham.

I used Nottingham in a similar recipe using Cascade and Challenger and it turned out great. The hops really came through

Just finished a Golden Ale recipe using Nottingham and it fermented out very fast and quite dry so you can't lose in that style.
Planning - Not for a long while

Fermenting - I'm Done

Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA

Drinking - Still...Whiskey

If it has already been sent it doesn't cost much for them to send a couple of sachets of yeast - I ordered 8 or 9 sachets from H+G and postage on it was only a pound and it got here 2 days after i ordered.

Also, Barley bottom sell yeast at 99p a pack, and Paul will only charge whatever the postage cost is - normally a quid or two for ten packs or so....

I did Cascade brew for my 1st AG, it was gorgeous.

Went with Delboy's suggestion, Nottingham worked great. Have recently repeated it with the US yeast and there is certainly more hop evident, tho I think I prefer the overall taste of the Nottingham batch.

Ive used cascade's many a time, they are not for english style beers, more your american style..eg SNPA.....grapefruit flavour, if used as aroma.

I used Cascade for my first AG, the recipe I was given from the lads on here was from the Marc Olloson book. Just do a search for Townes IPA, Nottingham yeast was fine with that!

Thanks for the suggestions chaps.

Ive decided to go for the following which is similar to Alasdairs recipe but i thought id dry adding the hops at different times and see how it turns out.



5kg Pearl Pale Malt
250g Crystal Malt
200g Torrified Wheat

30g Cascade 7.6% 90mins
20g Cascade 7.6% 60mins
15g Cascade 7.6% 15mins
10g Cascade 7.6% 0mins


Im not counting the 15 min hops towards my bitterness units so this works out at about 40IBU. Im not gonna dry hopping this time as ive got none of the hops bag things you use to put them in so ill see how it goes.

Would it be overkill to add more Cascade in at 0mins? Ill have 25g left which i dont mind keeping as ill get more of these but if it will benefit the beer ill throw them in im just not sure if it will be to much?

I'd say you're a bit light on the late hops, and I don't think you'll get much advantage hopping at both 90 and 60mins. I'd go for one early bitterness addition then save the rest for late hops - you get about 15% utilisation for 15mins compared with about 25-27% for 60mins so you will still get plenty of bitterness from later additions.
I'd work out about 30IBUs at 90mins then give it hefty amounts at 15mins and 0mins if it was my beer, but its up to you how hoppy you want it
