Newbie word of warning
Newbie word of warning
Just thought I'd share my last experience with you - funny now, seriously annoying at the time.
Just got back into homebrewing after a 10 year gap. Bought a bin, syphon, hydrometer etc from Wilkos and a kit (see thread on adapted beer recipies)
Well, after all that sterilising etc, i had my wort in the FV waiting for the yeast pitch. All looking great. Dropped in the hydro, and it was floating way out of the water, around the bulb - very odd. Took it out, and to my horror - the BRAND NEW hydro I bought had a small crack / flaw in the bubble base. As I inspected it, I saw a loose glass shard and some of the lead shot falling out on the counter.
Now - not sure whether glass or shot got into my wort. Thank goodness I had a second FV. Got to work sterilising that one. Then super sterilised some muslin cloth and a colander, and with the help of my good lady, transferred one to the other....
Added the yeast, and all doing well.
And yes - the muslin caught a couple of pieces of lead, and a shard of glass.
My stupid fault for not checking, but it was hardly noticeable

Hey thanks..
You live and learn. To be honest, my FV doesn't have tap at the base, so sterilising and cleaning trial jar for every hydro use a bit of a pain.

Re: Newbie word of warning
sorry - the thread was labelled as a "newbie" guide. i used to brew a lot many years back - the aim of the thread was just a bit of humour regarding the silly things that can go wrong.
As I said at the end - my own stupid fault.
ho hum

Re: Newbie word of warning
sorry if response seemed aggressive - just wanted to share what i can now look back on as an amusing episode.
Brew now doing nicely on day 4, calming down a bit, and hydro reading 1010 from an OG of 1042. Going to leave a couple or three more days, then into the bottles!
