belfast beer festival 2009, kaput!

Post by delboy » Wed Apr 29, 2009 9:19 pm

Saw on the NI branch website that the 2009 belfast beer fest is a non-starter. Apparently it wasn't economically viable at the kings hall (any wonder its a sh*te venue). They can't get a booking at the ulster hall (presumably going all upmarket since its makeover). So no beer fest this year, have to say one more nail in the coffin for my CAMRA membership, really no point chucking 20 squibs away for nothing.

Nah, as a Portstewart man born and bred, I have an innate dislike for our more common neighbours to the east and as it's Portrush they'll have to change it to a cheap lager festival

I mean to visit Port Stewart at some point. In all the times I've been to sunny Belfast/Ballymena/Antrim to see family I've never left Co Antrim!

Port Stewart can change that. Then down to Down for Slieve Donnard.

Couldn't you get UU to host it just outside Coleraine? They have conferences and things - what about the Students' Union?

The Hilden website is promoting the beer festival for 28 August - doesn't say anything about it being cancelled. I was at it last year and it was jam packed - at three quid a pint plus a tenner entrance fee I'd say it was a nice little earner. I'd be surprised if they didn't have it this year.
Kegged: 'Nowt
Bottled: Summer Lightning, Belfast Ale, JPA, Guinness Foreign Export

Also the look like there is going to be a home brew competition too if your interested in entering. A few of the Irish craft brews should be attending

Here is an update

just in from Frances- the competition is going to be for only one type of beer (a pale ale) which will be bottle conditioned. Entry is free - you just need to provide 6 bottles (330 or 500ml) to the brewery in advance of the occasion. The bottles should have clear white labels with the name of the brew, the ABV, and the name and address of the brewer.
The competition will be between 2-6pm, and you have to be there if you want your beer to be in the running for a prize. While the first prize hasn't been finalised it'll probably be a hamper of hops and malt.
Prices (in stg of course) are as follows for the days:
Friday Night 7.50
Saturday 10.00
Sunday 5.00
with a weekend pass for 18.00. People arriving before 4pm on Sat will also get some free BBQ food.
I got a list of the bands that will be there and there's more than you can shake a stick at - the weather has been booked for bright and sunny but not too humid, so all in all I think they've covered everything off Wink
