Brewing a good Stout

Post by leon103 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 3:47 pm

Hello All

After having a few attempts at Lager I want to brew a good Stout. From reading this forum, Coopers Stout seems a good start. What do people recommend to use with this? Sugar or Malt? When i have made lager I have either used house hold sugar or lager enhancer so have no experience with malt.
Also for the best result do you suggest using a keg or bottles for storage?

Cheers

i reccommend using either 500g Dark spraymalt and 500g brewing sugar or a can of coopers dark malt extract.
if you decide to use the spraymalt/sugar solution give it a good stir in the ferming bin so it all disolves.

i always barrel and leave it for at least 2 months. coopers stout is the best kit i have ever done

Thanks for the reply. I will look into the two options given.

I have recently brewed a john Bull Masterclass stout, and i must say it was absolutely fantastic, but it's a more bitter stout though.

stouts I make, (and recipes I've seen) very often suggest the steeping of roasted barley - works for me - gives a nice finish.

You could make an Extract brew with DSM and steeped grains/ boiled hops that will blow the socks off the good ol' Coopers Stout ;)

But spraymalt is always dry (until you mix it water;)).
Best wishes
