Grain Storage, what size of container will fit a Sack?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Sun Sep 13, 2009 11:47 am

With news of an Impending round of redundancies at work, I'm thinking I might stock up on grain while the money is still coming in.
I'd be keeping the Sacks in the cellar so need something air-tight and to keep the bugs out, I was thinking maybe a couple of those blue HDPE barrels from ebay, but what size would I need to fit in 25kgs of grain?? (maybe 1 barrel of Lager Malt and 1 of Maris Otter).

Thanks

Couple of these maybe? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0401109687

If your talking about those big blue things with the screw on tops, I emailed the company selling them and they said they were not airtight (50 litre size) I use a couple of these: https://www.hopshopuk.com/products/view ... cket-w-lid They are a bit expensive, but really nice quality. One sack fits in nicely with a little room left for specialty grain bags.

They are a little on the expensive side, nice though they are.
Good that the volume they are isn't so far off those I spotted on ebay, thanks.

About the right size but only a 10" (250mm) opening.... would a sack fit through that?

A new sack of malt is about 57 litres when I measured it a while ago. Cheap plastic dustbin?

How about sticking the grain in a HDuty Rubble type sack and heat sealing it and then place in one of those large Ikea/Tesco//other storage box's.
Come to think about it my grain from Tuckers is in a plastic sack but sewn, (( that word don't look right!) The Farmer sows his seeds, the farmers wife sews his shirts they both S?W any idea how you spell the last s?w ??)

FYI I noticed the Large storage box's are Food Grade so you could make a floating tun.

or

Put the money in an account for the use of grain and order fresh when you need it.

Just in case it helps anyone, I purchased a set of two of these: eBay Plastic Drums and they came with a screw on lid, but more importantly they had a plastic insert that went into the neck and made them airtight. I discovered they were airtight when I tried to drain one that I had turned into a boiler...

Good size, but only a 10" opening... I might get a couple anyway, not sure yet, just waiting for sizes from another seller.

Me too. Plastic dustbin from the garden centre. £9.99

Fits a full sack of grain, plus quite a few kilo bags and has proven mouse proof in my mouse infested garage.
