Sugar or spray malt for racking?

Post by Weejock » Sun Oct 04, 2009 8:40 am

I've picked up a 1kg pack of geordie beer enhancer from Wilko's, noticed that the best before date is June 2011, I figured if I opened it and transfered to a tupperware container I could use it instead of sugar when bottling/kegging.

Will the spray soil/go off/clump up or anything if I do this? Is there any advantage to the finished beer?

Spray malt always has it's "problems" with mixing in and clumping, but will dissolve eventually. The slightest bit of moisture makes it stick to any container, so keep it air tight. You are not likely to notice any difference in the finished beer if you use it for priming. I would stick to white sugar for priming and use the DME for brewing :D

Thanks trucker5774

I notice on your signature you have nettle beer as "down the drain"

Was it that bad or did something go wrong. I saw a recipe for nettle beer and was Intrigued, should I not bother?

The nettle day was "interesting" I started with the recipe as per the T.V. show River Cottage. They dont really make a beer as there is no malt in it. I used spay malt but also used the acid ingredients such as the lemon juice in their recipe. That was the mistake. I also used a large amount of nettles. "IF" I tried it again it would be just made as a beer using nettles rather than hops. I used about 4 carrier bags of nettles.............2 would do it  The whole brew was as sour as the lemon juice that was in it :!: The nettles made a nice starter at tea time fried with some cheese and spices (sag aloo) I do like Indian food!
Today I hope to bottle my strawberry and honey brews....................they taste much better =P~
